An affordable small-EV path into New Zealand's lowest new-EV price bracket.
Last reviewed: 23 April 2026
The Dolphin is BYD's small hatch in the NZ lineup, priced from around $35,000 new through BYD NZ dealers. It sits in a bracket with very few direct rivals, cheaper than a new MG4 in most trims and substantially cheaper than a new Kona Electric. For first-time EV buyers previously choosing between a petrol Yaris and a used Leaf, the Dolphin opens a third path with full factory warranty and NZ dealer support. Lender residual-value data is thinner than on the Atto 3 because volume is lower, which is worth knowing before committing to a long term.

Financing notes
At $38,000 across a five-year term at an indicative 7.3% EV tier rate, the weekly lands around $176, or $765 a month. Shortening to three years pushes the weekly up to roughly $269 but cuts total interest by more than half. The Dolphin's low sticker price makes it a sensible fit for buyers who want to keep the loan principal modest and avoid long terms, and the battery warranty still outlasts a five-year loan comfortably.
Model-specific questions
At most NZ lenders, yes. The EV tier applies across new BYD NZ stock on equivalent terms, so Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal quote from the same pricing band. A small number of lenders apply a minimum loan amount to their EV tier that the cheapest Dolphin variants may fall below, which is worth confirming when the broker runs the comparison.
For day-to-day urban and commuter use in New Zealand, no. For occasional longer trips (Auckland to Tauranga, Wellington to Napier), the Dolphin needs at least one planned rapid-charge stop each way, which adds 30 to 45 minutes to the journey. If the typical drive pattern is more than monthly long highway trips, the Atto 3 Extended Range or a Sealion 6 PHEV is usually a better fit.

Disclaimer
A car loan is a commitment that runs for years, and repayments come out of the same pay cheque as everything else. Before committing, it is worth modelling the weekly and monthly cost against the household budget, which is what this site is built to help with. Borrowing at a level that stays comfortable on a bad week, not a good one, is widely regarded as the safer frame.
Carfinance.org.nz earns a commission from a partner brand when a visitor applies through this site and their application is approved. That commission is paid by the partner, not the applicant, and it does not influence the rate the lender offers. We refer every visitor to the same partner because they compare multiple New Zealand lenders on the applicant's behalf, so the recommendation is not driven by a sponsored deal. Every figure shown on this site is a modelled estimate based on the inputs entered; the actual rate, fees, and repayments are set by the lender after assessing the applicant's circumstances and own credit decision. Carfinance.org.nz is a calculator and information tool. We are not a lender, not a broker, and not a registered financial adviser. Any decision about whether a specific loan suits a specific situation is best made after talking with the lender, and for amounts that materially affect the household, with a registered financial adviser.
