Lexus's compact sport sedan and the brand's longest-running rear-drive passenger car.
Last reviewed: 24 April 2026
The IS is Lexus's compact sport sedan and the cleanest rear-wheel-drive option the brand offers in New Zealand. The second-generation XE20 (2005 to 2013) established the NZ parc with IS250 petrol V6 and IS350 variants, and the third-generation XE30 (2013 to 2025) widened the range to include the IS300h hybrid, the performance-oriented IS350 F Sport, and the Japanese-market-only turbocharged IS200t. NZ-new stock has thinned considerably in recent years as Lexus has pushed the NX and ES as the passenger-car volume plays, which means the bulk of IS finance applications in 2026 are used-market: either late NZ-new XE30 examples clearing into the used pool, or Japanese-market imports covering the full XE20 and XE30 ranges. The IS cross-shops directly against the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Genesis G70.

Financing notes
At $24,000 on an early XE30 IS300h across a five-year term at 8.5% (indicative), the weekly repayment sits at roughly $114, or $493 a month. A $38,000 facelifted XE30 on the same settings lands near $181 a week. A $14,000 JDM-import XE20 IS250 over four years at 10% indicative runs near $85 a week. On JDM imports, four-year terms with a 15 to 20% deposit are widely observed as the sensible match to the steeper import resale curve and thinner parts availability on older examples. NZ-new XE30 residuals have held up comfortably enough to keep a five-year loan above water for most of the term on indicative NZ used-market trends.
Model-specific questions
On a $24,000 used XE30 IS300h at 8.5% indicative over five years with no deposit, the repayment works out to roughly $114 a week. A $38,000 facelifted XE30 IS300h on the same settings lands near $181 a week. A $14,000 JDM-import XE20 IS250 over four years at 10% indicative runs around $85 a week. A $62,000 late NZ-new IS300h F Sport over five years at 7.6% indicative sits near $288 a week. These figures are illustrative only; actual rates depend on the lender's assessment.
Yes on verified examples with clean compliance paperwork and a confirmed odometer history through Carjam or AA. The IS250 and IS350 share 2GR-FSE and related V6 components with a wide Toyota-group parts catalogue, which supports parts supply on older examples. The main trade-offs are no Lexus NZ factory warranty, a 0.5 to 1.5 percentage point rate premium over an NZ-new equivalent, softer residuals, and a loan term typically capped at four years rather than five to seven.
If annual distance sits above 10,000 km, the IS300h hybrid typically wins on total cost across a five-year loan because fuel spend runs roughly 40 to 50% below the IS350 V6 on widely observed NZ driving. Under 8,000 km a year, a used IS350 can be rational on lower buy-in at early-XE30 pricing. The IS350 is also the volume enthusiast-pick on JDM imports where the drivetrain is the buying driver rather than running-cost efficiency.
At matched sticker, an IS300h and an equivalent-age 330i or A4 40 TFSI typically loan at similar indicative rates on a comparable applicant profile. Running costs diverge: the IS300h is widely observed to sit below both German rivals on fuel and scheduled servicing across a five-year term because of Toyota-group parts supply and the hybrid drivetrain. Buyers who prioritise cabin refinement and driving characteristics commonly cross-shop 3 Series and A4; buyers who prioritise running-cost predictability commonly favour IS300h.
Usually yes on a shorter term. Most NZ secured-car-loan products cap vehicle age at 12 to 15 years at loan-end, so a 2014 XE30 IS250 financed over three years lands comfortably while a five-year application commonly tightens. JDM-import XE20 IS250 and IS350 examples from 2009 to 2013 are most accepted at two to three-year terms. Rates on older IS stock typically run 1 to 2 percentage points above current-generation pricing.
Generally yes on any remaining balance of the Lexus NZ factory warranty (current policy on new cars is 5 years or 150,000 km; confirm with Lexus NZ for the specific VIN), provided the car was sold NZ-new and the Lexus NZ service record is intact. JDM-import IS examples never carry Lexus NZ factory warranty. On imports, mechanical breakdown insurance is commonly priced separately at signing to cover the drivetrain and electronics across the loan term.
Four to five years is the widely observed band on NZ-new IS300h loans, aligned with any remaining Lexus NZ factory warranty. On used XE30 examples under $30,000, three and four-year terms are common because total interest stays modest and the balance pays down ahead of the depreciation slope. On JDM-import XE20 IS250 and IS350 stock, the term is typically capped at four years with a 15 to 20% deposit, so the loan clears ahead of the softer import resale curve.
The hybrid traction battery is the highest-exposure component on an older IS300h, with replacement costs typically running $4,000 to $8,000 at a Lexus NZ dealer on older examples. NZ-new XE30 IS300h cars are covered under the Lexus NZ factory hybrid battery warranty (current policy is 10 years or 240,000 km subject to conditions; confirm with Lexus NZ for the specific VIN), which commonly covers the full term of a standard loan. Outside warranty, mechanical breakdown cover is widely observed on ex-Japan imports.

Disclaimer
A car loan is a commitment that runs for years, and repayments come out of the same pay cheque as everything else. Before committing, it is worth modelling the weekly and monthly cost against the household budget, which is what this site is built to help with. Borrowing at a level that stays comfortable on a bad week, not a good one, is widely regarded as the safer frame.
Carfinance.org.nz earns a commission from a partner brand when a visitor applies through this site and their application is approved. That commission is paid by the partner, not the applicant, and it does not influence the rate the lender offers. We refer every visitor to the same partner because they compare multiple New Zealand lenders on the applicant's behalf, so the recommendation is not driven by a sponsored deal. Every figure shown on this site is a modelled estimate based on the inputs entered; the actual rate, fees, and repayments are set by the lender after assessing the applicant's circumstances and own credit decision. Any decision about whether a specific loan suits a specific situation is best made after talking with the lender, and for amounts that materially affect the household, with a registered financial adviser.
