Financing a Toyota Starlet in New Zealand

The Starlet is the small Toyota hatch that preceded the Vitz, and despite production ending in 1999 there are still more than 6,000 on New Zealand roads. That longevity is most of what a buyer is paying for. It is one of the cheapest ways into a Toyota here, and it is also the point at which secured car finance starts to run out: most lenders cap vehicle age at the end of the term, and a Starlet is now well past that on any normal term length.

Who this suits

Who buys a Toyota Starlet?

  • First-car buyers at the very bottom of the used market.
  • Buyers wanting a cheap, simple hatch with a deep parts supply.
  • Second-car households needing a runabout for short local trips.
  • Enthusiast buyers looking at the Glanza turbo variants.

Financing notes

What financing a Starlet usually looks like.

At $6,000 over two years at 8% indicative, the weekly repayment sits near $65. In practice most Starlet purchases are cash or a personal loan rather than a secured car loan, because the vehicle's age puts it outside what most lenders will write against. An unsecured personal loan is priced higher, which is worth knowing before assuming a car-loan rate applies.

Model-specific questions

Toyota Starlet finance FAQ.

Can a Toyota Starlet be financed in New Zealand?

Often not with a secured car loan. Most lenders cap how old a vehicle can be when the loan finishes, and a Starlet is now past that on any normal term. Where finance is used it is generally an unsecured personal loan, which is priced higher than a secured car loan and does not depend on the vehicle at all.

Is the Glanza different from an ordinary Starlet?

Mechanically yes. The Glanza V is the turbocharged variant and it trades on the enthusiast market rather than on ordinary used-car depreciation, so clean examples have held or firmed in value. Insurance is also priced differently, particularly for younger drivers.

What does a Starlet cost per week if financed?

A $6,000 personal loan over two years at an indicative personal-loan rate runs materially higher per week than the same amount on a secured car loan would. The calculator above models a secured loan, so the figures it gives are a floor rather than a quote for this vehicle.

Are Starlet parts still available here?

Mechanical parts are generally obtainable because the local parc is large and much is shared with other Toyotas of the period. Body panels and trim are increasingly scarce, and for most owners a wrecker rather than a dealer is the practical source.

Disclaimer

A car loan runs for years, and the repayment comes out of the same pay that covers everything else. This site exists to show you that weekly number before you sign anything. The payment that catches people out is the one that's fine on a good week and tight on a bad one.

Carfinance.org.nz receives a commission from Simplify when a visitor applies through this site and their application is approved. We refer every visitor to the same partner because they compare multiple New Zealand lenders on the applicant's behalf, so the referral is not driven by a sponsored deal. Simplify sets its own terms and fees and discloses them directly; anything you agree to happens on their side, not ours. Every figure shown on this site is a modelled estimate based on the inputs entered; the actual rate, fees, and repayments are set by the lender after assessing the applicant's circumstances and its own credit decision. Any decision about whether a specific loan suits a specific situation is best made after talking with the lender, and for amounts that materially affect the household, with a registered financial adviser.
